What is Hard Water?

Short and sweet? Hard water is water that has a high mineral content. It occurs when minerals like calcium and magnesium accumulate in your water during the water cycle. The more calcium and magnesium dissolved in the water, the harder the water becomes. This is why certain cities and counties within the same state can have varying degrees of water hardness. Why is Hard Water Bad?

While hard water is not necessarily unhealthy to consume, it can have a negative impact on your quality of life, as well as your plumbing system.

Hair: Taking showers using hard water is proven to decrease hair strength, increasing breakage (Luqman, 2018) as well as decreasing hair thickness and leaving hair looking like it has a ruffled appearance (Srinivasan, 2016). According to an article by Healthline, hard water also causes tangles, dullness, frizziness, brassiness, and dry scalp, which leads to dandruff.

Skin: Unfortunately showering with hard water not only effects your hair, but it effects your skin as well. The minerals in hard water (mainly calcium and magnesium) react with fatty acids in your soap and shampoo to form chemicals which form a residue on your skin. This residue causes your skin dry out and as a result look older as dry skin leads to fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, the residue left behind clogs your pores, leading to acne and worse skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis (Hong, 2020).

Appliances: One of the main concerns hard water brings to the table is scale buildup. Scale buildup is a result of calcium and magnesium mineral deposits in your hard water. This scale buildup clog pipes and as a result cause your appliances to run harder exposing them to wear and tear. A study done for the Water Quality Research Foundation by Battelle put the effects of scale buildup in appliances to the test. They simulated 12 years worth of use in 4 different appliances. The full study can be found here and a quick snapshot of their findings can be found below:
